Description
The white and black regions are different kinds of lichen and a bacteria brew known as desert varnish. The weathering pattern, so far as I can determine, are made when two rocks are in direct contact. When one of the rocks is moved, the ant-tunnel-like eroded shapes are revealed. This can create tiny voids like this, or many feet in diameter.
