Thanks. i use a Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro. I find that lens has outstanding clarity and contrast in this range. That's long enough, as you can get very close to hummingbirds. I used a white cardboard background, which appears grey if it is farther away, white if it is close. The flash is a custom built Olsen Ultra high speed flash, which is quite old, but in truth, for hummingbirds, Canon 550 flashes are good enough if set at 1/128th power and placed very close to the bird. Most used autofocus, since my 5D focuses quickly enough on a hovering hummingbird. However, in low light, it works fairly well to prefocus on where the bird usually hovers.
